The WAGO 873-902 is a yellow, 2-pole LUMI-NUTS luminaire disconnect connector. It lets you unplug a ballast or LED driver from line power without cutting wires, which is what NEC 410.130(G) asks for in most commercial fixtures. WAGO lists a UL rating of 20A at 600V. The line side (plug) accepts 18–12 AWG solid or 16–12 AWG stranded wire and takes two conductors per pole, so you can daisy-chain fixtures. ITDsales stocks it for 30-minute pickup in Duncansville, PA, or shipping nationwide: shop WAGO 873-902 luminaire disconnects.
What is the WAGO 873-902?
The 873-902 is a two-piece, plug-together push-wire connector that sits between the branch circuit and a fixture's ballast or driver. Pull the two halves apart and the ballast is isolated; push them together and the fixture is live again. They are a part of WAGO's LUMI-NUTS 873 Series.
Both halves are touch-safe whether mated or unmated. They lock together with an integral latch and are keyed so they cannot be mated the wrong way.

How the WAGO 873-902 meets the NEC disconnecting requirement
In indoor locations other than dwellings, NEC 410.130(G)(1) (2020 and earlier editions) requires a disconnecting means, inside or outside the luminaire, for fluorescent fixtures with double-ended lamps and ballasts that can be serviced in place. When a ballast is replaced in an existing fixture without one, a disconnect must be added at that time. The line-side terminals must be guarded, which is why the 873-902's touch-safe housing matters. The code does not dictate a specific device: a switch, a plug-type connector or a listed luminaire disconnect like the 873-902 can all qualify, as long as it meets the requirement.
In the 2023 NEC, the rule moved to 410.71 and broadened to cover LED luminaires as well as fluorescent ones. Check which code edition your jurisdiction has adopted.
Common exceptions include dwellings, hazardous (classified) locations, required emergency illumination, cord-and-plug-connected fixtures, and some industrial sites where only qualified persons service equipment under written procedures. On multiwire branch circuits, the disconnect must open all supply conductors to the ballast at once, including the neutral.
WAGO 873-902 installation overview
Disclaimer: The following is a general overview only and is not intended as installation instructions. Always reach out to a licensed electrician to install any electrical connection, and follow the instructions supplied with the product, the NEC and local codes.
- Turn off and lock out the branch circuit, then verify it is dead with a tester.
- Strip line-side conductors 11–13 mm (about 7/16 to 1/2 in) and ballast leads 9–11 mm. There is a strip gauge printed on every 873 series connector. I recommend a WAGO-compatible wire stripper for consistent length.
- Push the line-side conductors (hot and neutral, 18–12 AWG) straight into the line-side half (plug) until they bottom out. Add a second conductor per pole to feed the next fixture.
- Push the 18 AWG solid ballast or driver leads into the load-side half (socket), matching the marked poles.
- Pull-test every conductor.
- Snap the halves together until the latch clicks.
- To service the fixture later, press the latch and pull the halves apart.

Where 873-902 connectors may be used
- Ballast and LED driver replacements in offices, schools, churches, hospitals and retail, where code requires adding a disconnect at the time of replacement.
- LED retrofit kits that keep the fixture body but swap the ballast for a driver.
- Homes and garages switching from fluorescent lights to LED for lower energy costs. A disconnect isn't required in dwellings, but it makes the next driver replacement faster and safer.
- Churches and houses of worship upgrading sanctuaries, fellowship halls and classrooms with LED retrofit kits, where the same NEC disconnect rule applies as in other non-residential buildings.
- Rows of troffers or strip lights, daisy-chained fixture to fixture using the two-conductors-per-pole line side. The luminaire disconnects act as both the disconnect plug and the pass-through terminal. No need for pigtails, wire nuts, or extra spices.
- New commercial fixture installs where the luminaire did not ship with a factory disconnect.

Pick the 3-pole 873-903 when the fixture needs a third conductor for switching or dimming control. Choose the 873-953 when the ground needs to pass through the disconnect; its center ground pole connects first and disconnects last. Use 221 lever nuts for ordinary splices elsewhere in the job.
Contractor and bulk pricing for the WAGO 873-902
ITDsales prices the 873-902 so the cost per piece drops as the pack size goes up. Contractors, facility maintenance teams and fixture builders who need larger quantities for retrofits and new installs get the biggest savings.
- Single pieces and small packs for service calls and one-off ballast replacements: buy 1 piece or choose a small pack.
- Contractor packs for multi-fixture retrofits: 500-pack, 2,000-pack and 2,500-pack.
- Commercial and OEM quantities for large projects and fixture manufacturing: 5,000-pack,7,500-pack, 10,000-pack and 15,000-pack.
With each larger quantity pack, the price per piece drops, so it pays to purchase the connectors needed for the whole job. Current prices are on each product page. Repeat high-volume customers may also qualify for account pricing; contact us through our website.
Frequently asked questions
What wire size does the WAGO 873-902 accept? The line side (commonly referred to as the plug) accepts 18–12 AWG solid or 16–12 AWG stranded conductor. The load side (commonly referred to as the socket) accepts 18 AWG solid, the standard ballast lead size.
What is the WAGO 873-902 rated for? The UL rating is 20A at 600V. Under the IEC standard EN 60998 it is rated 6A at 400V with a 4 kV impulse withstand voltage..
Can you daisy chain WAGO 873-902 disconnects? Yes. Each (plug) line-side pole holds two conductors, so one wire comes in and one continues to the next fixture.
Is the WAGO 873-902 UL listed? Yes. It is certified to UL 2459 and CSA C22.2 No. 2459 under UL file E313353.
Can I replace a ballast or driver without shutting off the whole circuit? Yes. The WAGO 873-902 is a UL 2459 listed, touch-proof luminaire disconnect designed to meet NEC 410.130(G) (410.71 in the 2023 NEC). It lets you isolate and service a single fixture's ballast or LED driver while the rest of the branch circuit stays on.
Can I use the WAGO 873-902 in a house? Yes. Any time you replace a ballast with an LED driver, residential or commercial, you can install the 873-902 in the fixture. The NEC only requires a luminaire disconnect in locations other than dwellings, but adding one at home makes the next driver replacement faster and safer.
Can I reuse a WAGO 873-902? The halves can be unplugged and re-mated repeatedly. Per UL, the push-in terminals are reusable with solid wire but not with stranded wire, so use a fresh connector when re-terminating stranded conductors.
What strip length does the 873-902 need? 11–13 mm (about 7/16 to 1/2 inch) on the line side and 9–11 mm on the ballast side. There is a strip gauge printed on every 873 series connector.
Does ITDsales offer bulk pricing on the WAGO 873-902? Yes. The price per piece goes down as the pack size goes up, with packs from a single piece up to 15,000. Contractor and commercial buyers save the most on larger packs; see all 873-902 pack sizes. Repeat high-volume customers may also qualify for account pricing; contact us through our website.
